This is my first turn serving as president of the BRCC, though I have been watching with great interest from the wings for some time. I follow on the heels of Bob Long, who took the lead when no one else was prepared to, and guided the Chamber to where it is now – a vibrant, thriving organization that people want to join. Whether this makes my job easier, or harder, I don’t know but at least it won’t be dull.
With our ever-expanding project base and information upload, the BRCC was in dire need of a space upgrade. And we’re returning to our roots, at Building 607 (across from Tittaq Office Products), which until recently was the home of MacKay Landau (and from 1997–2001, was the original home of the BRCC!). You’ll also find the Nunavut Film Development Corporation and the Nunavut Broadband Development Corporation sharing space with us.
Membership certificates have been sent out to all members of the BRCC, along with an overview of the benefits of being a member of the Baffin Regional Chamber of Commerce, including:
If your business is interested in participating in the Member to Member Program, either by taking advantage of the benefits, or by offering benefits for other members, including discount offers and reward packages, please contact our Member Services Manager, Sadie Vincent-Wolfe at members@baffinchamber.ca or call her at (867) 979.4654. We are all looking forward to working with you this coming year to make the Baffin Regional Chamber of Commerce and exciting and rewarding Chamber to be a member.
After the success of the Northern Lights Trade
Community Economic Development (CED) Weeks are up and running again, and we thank all those who take the time to join us in our Baffin communities. It is your participation that enriches the event, both for the delegates, and the people who attend in the communities. We encourage interested businesses to join us as we tour across the Baffin region. For more information, please contact events@baffinchamber.ca or visit our CED Weeks page.
The bookkeeping program will begin later this year. With the success of the program last time, demand should be high, and interested participants are encouraged to complete an application as soon as possible.
Congratulations to last year’s participants: Mary Akavak and Karen Nungak of Kimmirut, Laisa Watsko of Grise Fiord, and Lisa McGrath of Iqaluit. They completed the intense program, which ran from March 2007 to March 2008, and are now qualified bookkeepers who can serve their communities in both the private and public sector. Also congratulations to Nuna Michael and Missy Kinnear of Iqaluit, who received Algonquin College’s bookkeeping certificate.
