About

Northwestel is the largest telecommunications provider in Canada’s North, serving 97 communities across the Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut, as well as Northern British Columbia and Northern Alberta. Each with a rich and unique Indigenous history, culture, and identity. We exist to help ignite the power of these First Nation, Inuit and Métis communities through the very best communications technology and services. We are committed to doing so in true partnership and consultation with Indigenous governments and other northern Indigenous partners in a way that creates shared benefits for people in the North. The Government of Canada is investing more than $86 million through the Universal Broadband Fund in a Northwestel project that will bring unlimited high-speed Internet to 11,650 households across all 25 Nunavut communities. Northwestel will work with Telesat to use its Lightspeed low Earth orbit satellite network to deliver more reliable connectivity to some of Canada’s most remote communities. The investment is intended to help close the digital divide in Nunavut, improving access to essential services, education, employment opportunities and online resources while supporting stronger, safer and more connected communities. In 2018, Northwestel launched the Tamarmik Nunaliit network, bringing high-capacity Internet and LTE wireless services to every Nunavut community. The network continues to support critical services such as health care, education and mental health services, while providing Internet, LTE cellular and wide-area network solutions backed by local Nunavut-based technicians. Northwestel continues to evolve its services to meet the needs of Nunavummiut, including increasing Katittuq 15 monthly data allowances by 100 GB in 2022 and exploring opportunities with government partners to bring fibre connectivity to Nunavut.
